Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Colin Woodell to Star in Christopher Shinn’s Dying City at Second Stage

BROADWAY – Casting is set for Second Stage’s off-Broadway revival of Christopher Shinn’s 2007 Pulitzer-finalist play Dying City. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Colin Woodell will headline the previously announced two-hander, directed by Obie winner Lila Neugebauer, set to begin previews on May 14 and open on June 3 at the Tony Kiser Theater. Tickets are now on sale.

Both actors are making their New York stage debuts. Winstead is currently in production for the highly anticipated film Birds of Prey; her other credits include Gemini Man and All About Nina. Woodell is a screen star known for Call of the Wild, Unsane and The Purge.

Dying City is set in a spare Manhattan apartment where a young widow receives an unexpected visit from the twin brother of her deceased husband. The play explores the human fallout of global events, including the Iraq War and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, through the interwoven stories of three characters.

Joining Neugebauer on the creative team is scenic designer Dane Laffrey, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Tyler Micoleau and sound designer Bray Poor.

Dying City will play a limited engagement through June 30.

‘Birds of Prey’ Adds Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Black Canary and Huntress

VARIETY – After testing multiple actresses to join Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in “Birds of Prey,” Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are closer to assembling its team of female superheroes.

Sources tell Variety that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell have been tapped to join Robbie in the comic-book spinoff, with Winstead playing Huntress and Smollett-Bell portraying Black Canary.

Robbie is reprising her role as Quinn, which she first unveiled in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” and is also on board to produce with Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless.

There are several versions of Huntress, aka Helena Bertinelli, throughout DC Comics. The “Birds of Prey” iteration is a former mafia princess who was devastated at a young age when her family was killed in a mob hit, turning her into a vigilante and eventually leading her to join the Birds of Prey team. Black Canary, aka Dinah Lance, is a good-natured and idealistic streetfighter in the comics.

In the film, the team will fight a Gotham crime lord who has yet to be unveiled.

Cathy Yan is directing the pic, which is set to be released on Feb. 7, 2020.

Winstead’s star has been on the rise since her leading role in the Bad Robot movie “10 Cloverfield Lane.” She recently earned some of the best reviews of her career in the FX series “Fargo.” Winstead just wrapped “Gemini Man,” opposite Will Smith, and also has “The Parts You Lose.” She is repped by WME.

Ang Lee is directing the unique action thriller

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Mary Elizabeth Winstead has nabbed the female lead in Gemini Man, the Will Smith action thriller that Ang Lee is directing.

Skydance and Paramount are behind the project, which is eyeing a February start.

The film sees Smith playing two opposing roles: one of Henry, an aging assassin who wants to get out of the business, and that of his ultimate opponent, a clone who is 25 years younger and at the peak of his abilities that has been tasked to kill him.

Winstead, who beat out Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany for the role, will play an operative who works for the same company as Henry and has been ordered to surveil him. However, she soon teams up with him.

Clive Owen is currently in talks to play one of the villains of the movie, the head of the cloning program.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing along with Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg. Don Murphy is executive producing.

Winstead, whose last movie turn was in the hit 10 Cloverfield Lane, is coming off a co-starring run in season three of FX’s acclaimed Fargo. She is repped by WME.
